Purge Your Closets The Right Way
9/1/2019
As my Organize Your Entire Home, A 10-Week Challenge begins, the first thing we MUST address are closets! The first disclaimer I have is- you need to set aside some time to address whatever closet you are tackling, because being interrupted half way through is going to cause even more anxiety because of the mess you are about to create. So with that out of the way, let's get started. You are going to need a flat surface, so make your bed first (that is if you are working on a closet in a bedroom with a bed) Now remove everything from your closet....yes, everything! And if you have piles of laundry anywhere; wash it and fold it and add it to the mix! Once your clothing is OUT, you are going to go through each item, one at a time, and sort each clothing item into one of three piles: KEEP. Things you LOVE, that you wear regularly, that fit properly, and that are in good condition. These are the clothing items that truly bring you joy. But what if you haven’t worn something for a while but “think” you still LOVE it, then try it on! Make sure. Take the time now or you will be redoing this crazy shit in a month! Yu've got to go with your first reaction, here is the key. Do you feel super amazing when you wear it? Does it make you look incredible? Is your heart happy? Then keep it! Are you not sure about it? It's got to go! Seriously. I may bring someone else happiness, move on. TOSS. Items that are ripped or torn, stained, or unclean-ably stinky. Just let it go, even if it’s been a long time favorite! DONATE. Items in good repair that you know you don’t wear, don’t love, that don’t fit, or that you no longer need. This pile is a little more difficult in making a decision to keep or let go. Do not keep something out of a vague sense of guilt; because it is still in good shape but you don’t wear it; or because it was expensive so you can’t let it go, but it's time to let it go. What is it really serving? It's not serving anything, it's just taking up space! If you are like me you may change out your closet wth the seasons, so you store those items until it's time for them to come out. If this is you, get those clothes out to and apply the same tips. Another helpful tip if you're a clothes hoarder like I comfortably admit to being, something I do every time I purchase something new- whether it's a new top, dress, shoes- I donate 3 things for every one new thing I add to my closet. This has helped tremendously cut down the amount of clutter in my closet. Keeping your wardrobe to a reasonable level will mean that you never overcrowd your closets, dressers, and bedroom again. Because we really don’t want to end up back where we started, do we? I know I don’t! For more tips on how to organize your closets, join the discussion on Facebook, by joining my 10-week challenge. It's only $27 for the entire 10 weeks, and you can begin anytime!
